85 735i E23 Heater Control Help Needed (archive)

I am having problems with the heater controls on my 85 735i.

The fan does not run with the Defrost button pushed. If I then push any other button, the fan will come on and air will come out the defrost vent for awhile then after 20 seconds to 4 minutes I hear the flaps close, the fan will keep running but no air comes out any of the vents (defrost, heater or AC vents). If I then push the defrost button the fan shuts off. This can be repeated with the same response no matter which of the other heater or AC buttons are pushed.

Is this a problem with the control buttons, the control solenoids or the flaps?

I've pulled the console and exposed the little solenoids with the various colored hoses. Does anyone have a diagram that shows which colored hose goes to which flap and/or which solenoids should be open and which should be closed for each button setting?

Also, does anyone have instructions for how to get at the flaps?
