My understanding of the system is the default setting is defrost. This way if you have a complete failure of the vent controls you will still have defrost. Do a search on this and you'll find many folks talking about their experiences. You need to start with the pump and work your way through the entire system to look for leaks as well as bad solenoids. Do you hear any solenoid clicking from behind the ashtray?
