a.c. through the defrost? why?

the system defaults to the defrost position.

When you rev the engine you increase the vacuum supply for a short time, causing the sytem to try to set to the correct "select button" position.

As Jens suggest find out if the vacuum pump is working.

Check to see that the vacuum lines are in good condition.

Got to get the vacuum fixed before you trouble shoot further.
