I always replace the thermostat if temp gauge goes into the red and/or the engine overheats. At the very least remove it and examine it. If it is stuck partially open, the engine will run cold. Pull it out and boil it in water on the stove, or just replace it as it is cheap!
Thanks, I'll have to check it out. Thankfully I caught the water pump failure before overheating.
