Auto transmission? It is strange that transmission has gone first. You'd expect others major things first, unless engine was reffed a lot in neutral. Maybe you can find out what else has been repaired over last 12-24months. At this kind of age you have to expect that many components of the running gear need exchanging. If he hasn't done any major repairs I possibly would be extreamly cautious bying the car.
Just my thoughts.
