You can easily remove the pump. It's a fine idea to clean the area very well so you don't get junk into your tank. It is also a good idea to have wet rags lying around to absorb the spilled fuel. Just remove the wires and hoses to the pump under the carpet and unscrew the retaining ring.
Lift out the old pump.
You can retrofit a pump for a 1976 Chevy Vega with very little modifications. the benefit of doing this is the cost. It's only $30 for a vega pump and lots more for the BMW pump.
Gas fumes. Do this job outside.
