30KB That's about right. Had you clicked on it, your machine would have appeared to lock up, forcing you to turn it off, and re-boot. What really happened was that you had placed a Trojan on your hard drive. The Trojan activates upon re-boot.
What the trojan does is simple. It is a progam that allows the attacker to take control of your computer. Once we have control, we can play with you a bit, doing things like open or close your CD drive, or reverse your screen. We can even turn it upside down. If we really don't like you, we can take jpg's and make them your wallpaper. So becareful what you keep on your machine.
But once your attacker is tired of playing, things can get really nasty. we can do things like, map your hard drive just like a network, we can download your files, cookies, and passwords. We can take snapshots of your screen, and in one click, we can record all of your keysteps. Think about that the next time you do on-line banking. BTW, all this is done in the background. You won't see a thing.
It could also have been a Zombie. Then your computer can participate in the next Denial of service attack on someone's Web site.
All from a 30k file. Or 32K or 13K. We can choose the size.
oh, and that part about jpg files. Don't be so trusting.
