The clunk could be your CV joints in the rear axels. I had this same thing happen on my 735 and discoverd that a boot had busted on the inner CV joint. Produced the same clunking noise and also a slight vibration at about 25 mph.

As far as the hesitation goes when selecting gears, how long has it been since the fluid was changed? Was having the same problem in my car this week. I looked and it had been 15,000 miles since I'd changed it. Should be every 10,000. Works fine now!
