a high powered engine and wide, low profile tires. The power breaks the tires loose and the wide profiles act like sleds (or toboggans) on the snow.

If you stay in the higher gears, apply power gently (I imagine that would be a trick in a 745i), and mount the narrowest tread, studded snow tires you can, on all 4 corners, and the car will be no worse than any other rear wheel drive car. Yes, weight in the trunk would be a plus, although lack of weight is not a problem in these cars.

Using these practices, I have never found any of my BMW's... 5, 6, or 7 to be problems in the snow, driven sensibly. I have never owned a 745, but have had plenty of fairly muscley domestic rides.
