732i or 733i, which is it? (archive)

Hey, newbie here. I just purchased my first BMW. A 99% restored 1982 733i. When I registered the VIN with BMW of North America it said that I had a 732i. The california registration and the previous owner says it's a 733i.

Is there a difference? and how could I tell, and does it really matter?

The car is in great shape and runs wonderfully, just wondering what's up with the model #.
