Liked the editorial... Bottom Line... if you want a really nice car, the least expensive way to buy one is to bite the bullet and buy a nice one, then budget to maintain it. I believe that even as an inveterate DIY'er and after years and years of auto enthusiasm, if you start with a project car, plan on ultimately spend half again to twice as much before you have the car you could have bought that needs no immediate work.

Another point you made is about chasing down the $1700 car. Almost every time I see one of these cars, I ask two questions. First, "Hi, what year is your BMW?" Second, "Is it for sale?"

They always are!
