it was some crazy metric sized wheel - 390 mm
approximately 15.3 inches in diameter. bottom line is that only 'TRX' tires fit those wheels. tires were made by Michelin - expensive. and now the technology for the tire is very outdated.
will now go downstairs to check pile of old tires - the size for 7 series was 220 mm (55 series profile). 5 series used the 200 mm width.

ps. Ford Mustangs (made in 1985+) also used that size.
