Can car be driven w/o PS fluid filter? (archive)

Wondering if i could drive the car with the Filter from the canister (PS fluid) out. Or do i need a filter in for proper idle?

Trying to get home tommorw :-( No noise with filter out and steering wheel turning nicely with it out but the idel seems to be dropping and car turns off with it out
