I had this problem once on a six series. That one did not fit the other and they both were of the same year.

But you can always swap the entire column, although your electric connector and no. of wires are different. This change was done at the same time. But electrics can be made to work quite easily.

I did't like my steering wheel at first and I fitted 3spoke 535 wheel onto it. Took it off a day later.
The 3 spoke wheel just looks completely out of place in combination with the E23 dash.
In my opinion it looks just silly and spoils the esthetics of the car.
I am still searching for the right wheel myself.
Tried the 4 spoke wheel of E28 too, Still looks wrong.
I think what I want is a steering wheel made from walnut wood (or do you call it burlap), but still with four spokes.
Before you change anything may I suggest to try to picture the look of it in place of your existing one.
