Open the footwell covers and check the wire colours. Same check the rear.
With an Ohm meter you can check that the wires are not interupted.
Also bear in mind that radios were fitted not only with balance but also faders in the mid eighties.
For this reason you often find E23's without faders built in.
I hope this is true and not that you could get the car with either 2 or 4 speakers. Which would make the fader obsolete.
If your car radio has a fader built in.
Look for 4 speaker output at the rear of the radio, you should bypass the fader and reconnect cables.

If you cannot identify the problem. Email the wiring diagram to me and I tell you what's wrong.
