When I got my 85 535i it only came with the valet key. I went to the dealer, with the registration and my D/L and they were able to give me the key code. They weren't sure if they had codes on cars that old but they did. I then took that to a good local locksmith and they code cut me a key. It was about $30 but it is a brand new key, not a copy of a copy etc. Another possibility is the code may be on the lock cylinders, it was on earlier cars, as late as an 83 320i that I had. I don't know if they discontinued that practice by year or series. If it is an early one it should be something like HB1234. If its later, it is HB and about ten digits after it.
Good Luck

I went to BMW dealer and my bimmers reg. number was not in the U.S. data base(go figure). He is going to fax my info to Georgia and from there to Germany to find key code for my 1983 before he can order key. 3-5 days wait.
