The one in my 86 L7 is almost toast. The one in the 635i is a 3.46 non-limited slip. Any comments welcome.

Yes,you can certainly use the E24 rear.Just change backing plate,and probably side plates,and it goes right in.

You also may/may not be in for a pleasant surprise;your diff may be a 3.45 already,(look at the metal tag on one of the rear cover bolts to see)but if not this one will lower the ratio a bit adding more usable power,
If you already have the 3.45 ratio,I have a 3.73 open diff from a friend's car that is low mileage,and for sale reasonably.This ratio will definitely add noticably to your usable power.
Did to my car when I installed one earlier this year;the third BMW I've changed this way.
