Ralf,

Appreciate the heads up. I am pretty sure the problem was the battery. One of the cells was registering pretty low on the hydrometer. I am sure it would require all six cells to fire up the car in the cold. Checked all the connections and they are fine. Replaced the battery cables not too long ago, but never hurts to check the obvious things first. Would not be the first time a loose connection became the bane of my existence.

Sorry I have seen many batteries, but I haven't heard of optima. Varta, Bosch, Sonnenschein, Banner are known to me.
If you find that the trouble with you batterie starts again in a few months. Check the connections on your alternator. Give them a good pull. Sometime they look fine but they aren't and burn a lot of energy directly there.
Regards
Ralf
