I've actually had the same exact problems with my e23. What I found out was there was a good amount of rust/corrosion way up inside the fender (both fenders in fact).
On the drivers side, the box I think you're referring to on the bottom is the speedo control unit, although I don't know that for sure. What I do know is that when I explored further by taking both that box and the OBC box out completely, I found a huge amount of rust on the wall behind the OBC box. So much in fact that it made a hole in the fender, had corroded a hole through the aluminum in the OBC box, and started making its way through the circuit board causing all that erratic crap on the OBC display.
I re-soldered a few connections, used sandpaper and ductape, and it works fine now. The same thing was happening to the passengers side where the Motronic unit is mounted so beware.
