Wont hurt but the car will really run badly. Use something else to gauge the engine temp besides the cluster gauge. Melt stick? Just to be sure it's not lying to you.

Also do yourself a favor Take the housing to someone who can remove the broken off bolt without damaging the housing. If it is really eaten up then replace it. Other wise you'll be wasting you time and money.
