Should be 3 nuts on the top mount connecting it to the shock tower. You DON'T want to remove the top nut since it holds the spring in place. Basically you remove the whole assembly from the car. I've been able to remove the nuts from the trunk with the help of a u-shaped wrench, but there are access holes that you can use once the rear seat is removed.

Is the upper nut of the rear shock shaft only accessable from the trunk or can the rear seat be removed in order to get better access?

I was expecting that there would be 3 nuts for the mount and 1 nut for the shaft. This car only has one nut at the top per rear shock.
