Identification of a Motronics 83 745i (archive)

There is a post that has an 83 745i with a veritcal distributor. Does this make it a non Motronic head? My 83 745i has a horizontal distributor coming off the front of the head. What is the difference between the two set ups? At sometime in 83, the conversion was made to Motronic setup. Is anyone familiar with the VIN that was the first to go this way? I have my engine disassembled, and am looking for parts, so the information is important.
