I believe the factory started using 205/70 tires on 14x7 inch wheels. Later changing to the TRX tire/wheel combo. E32's were sold with 225/60 tires on 15x7 inch wheels (these fit e23's perfectly).
I changed to an aftermarket 15x7 inch wheel using the 225/60 tires many years ago. It works great on my e23. I recommend V rated tires.

your problem was using a tire that is "too tall". Not only did it not fit the wheel well, it would also throw off your speedometer and make your car "feel and accelerate slower".
