Jerking '86 735i...whiplash-city! (archive)

Last week, the mounting bracket on my rear-end cover broke and my rear end dropped and rested on top of my exhaust system. I had to creep home (about 15 miles at 10-15 mph). I found a replacement at the wrecking yard and put it on with no problem -- I thought...

This week my car has suddenly begun jerking and hiccupping on acceleration. It's really bad until I reach about 80 mph (Unfortunately, in Dallas, I can't drive at 80 all day long) then it gets less severe but never truly goes away. To me, it feels like the "dirty/clogged fuel filter" or "rust in the gas tank" problems I've experienced with other cars, except it starts jerking right away. With the other fuel problems, it usually takes a few minutes for the crud & crap to float around and start blocking the fuel passages. There is a warning light that blinks on erratically, too. It is a round gear with an exclamation mark in the middle. I can't find an explanation of this light in the owners manual. I'm assuming it means "hurry up and get to a mechanic!!"

Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Could this jerking somehow be linked to the rear-end needing some adustments or tightening/loosening, or just a funky coincidence with a totally separate fuel problem?

Lordy, Lordy, I hope someone can help.

Thanx,
Darius
