There appears to be 3 connetions to the circuit board, but I suspect that one is just when the 2 batteries bridge together. I have an external holder, do I just need to attach the 2 end wires, or does the bridge wire need to go back to the circuit boar as well.

Kevin used a radioshak one,
and what I did I mounted a 2/batterie holder
to the rear of the cluster and ran a wire inside,
works great.
