I saw a '77 733i with manual shift in the parts yard today...

First, it's probably a '79 as '78 was the first year for the 733i and early production was 728 carburated.

Second, unless the gearbox was changed, it's a 4-speed (exactly the same as 5-speed except without the .81 overdrive gear). The original diff ratio should be 3.46, non-Limited Slip. Check it though, as LS was a very rare option and it could have been changed. Get underneath and scrape away grease to see numbers. LS has an 'S' on the case.
