Help!, its barely running (archive)

I have an 85 735i, as well as a 325, anyway the 7 is having some problems. A couple days ago it was running a little rough, hessitating some. The main fuel pump was also making more noise than usual. The next day, after a short drive i parked the car and smelled alot of gas, it was dark and i parked the car overnight. This morning i fixed the leak, a hose under the hood, and then took the car for a drive. It barely made it down the street and back. The symptoms: After sitting for about 20 mins, the car fires right up and runs great for about 30 seconds, then the idle drops and it runs really rough. The engine dies when I give it gas, it also blows some black smoke and backfires. The fuel filter is only a couple weeks old and I replaced the plugs today which were badly carbon fouled (they looked fine last week) I know it could be alot of things, but any help is greatly appreciated
