Yup, bad seals around tail-light lenses, Chris. Solution is new seals and 'maybe' some 'gasket in a tube' or similar product if gaps have developed that are too big for the new seals to close. Sometimes the screws holding the lenses in have rusted too. While you're at it check the Roundel on the trunk. You might also be getting water seeping through the old Roundel seals that, while it won't put water in your trunk, it will rust out the trunk top underneath and below the Roundel.

I have a 1980 733i. Where is all the water in my trunk coming from. The seal around my truck seams to be fine. Do the drain tubes for the sunroof or the vents on the rear roof piller go through the trunk. My dad has a 1983 528e with the same problem. I live in western Washington in the US and it rains all the time so i can't use my truck for anything unless it is plastic!
