How to Mount a Eight Inch Sub Speaker in the e23 Rear Deck
First, remove the following:
Rear seat bottom
Rear seat back
Rear "C" pillar interior trim
Rear deck interior panel
Sound deadening "Jute" blanket
Foam insulation on trunkside of rear deck
First, draw (in magic marker) the location
of the trunk spring torsion bars on the top
of the rear deck in marker, for reference.
Then center the location for the rear speaker
hole in the rear deck, and cut the deck hole, BEING
CAREFUL NOT TO CUT THROUGH THE TORSION BARS.
Now,since you will be installing the subwoofer
from the trunkside, you will need a spacer because
of the torsion bars. I used 3/4" pine, a 12" wide
piece I had laying around. I first routered a 5/8"
deep groove in it for the for the bars to pass
though, then held it up to the rear deck from the
trunk side and trace the sub speaker cut out hole on it. I traced this hole from inside the car I then rechecked
the diameter against my cutout template, and then
jigsawed out the holein the wood spacer. Drill
the mounting bolt holes in the wood around the
speaker opening, and set it aside.
Now put your rear deck interior trim piece in
place and from the trunk, trace the hole you cut
in the rear deck sheet metal onto it. Remove the
interior piece lift up the carpet as much as you
can (up to the rear shade) and cut the CARDBOARD
ONLY. I decided to poprivit some expanded steel
mesh to the cardboard, but under the carpet, in
case somehow weight was put on the rear shelf over
the speaker. Glue the carpet back down to the car-
dboard.
Put the wood spacer up to the underside of the
rear deck, and mark the speaker mount bolt holes
on the rear deck. Remove the wood and drill these
hole into the rear deck. Bolt the rear speaker(with
spacer) to the underside of the rear deck, caul-
king the deck to the spacer and lock titing the mount-
ing bolts, and reinstall everything else in the car....
I located my amplifier on the trunk front wall
and ran the wires behind the panel, so all you
see is the amp hanging on the wall and maybe 2"
of each wire before it would go into a hole in
the panel.
