Thump/clunk in the rear of car "85" 735i auto (archive)

Oh, oh. Bad news in CA. I have developed a major thump
clunk in the rear when I do anything but idle ahead or in
reverse for that matter.
Sounds like something hitting the body undeneath.
I put it up and jack stands and when I give it some gas in
the forward position it shakes the car to the point I am
afraid it might fall off of the jacks.
Any help out there?
