I own a 1981, 728i. The car has recently undergone engine overhaul. It is running perfectly except that there is "thud" sound everytime I lift my foot off the gas padel. Recently I also had the differential changed as there was some whinning at speed of 60kmh upwards. I have checked with four mechanics regarding the "thud" sound and obtain two different advise. Two said that the problem is due to the differential whereas the other two said that the problem is due to the long shaft. Could anyone familar with this problem assist?

Sounds simpler than that, suspect it is a rear subframe bushing that is broken. Have them check all the bushings first.
