I'd probably jack up the rear end, support it *very* well with car jacks (I'm stressing *very*, because this is something you'd want to be very careful with, buddy...), and try to replicate the sound.

But, then again, I'm a very crazy person -- see my results of insanity test posted by Bruce H above... 8-)

You could have someone else (not a faint-hearted person...) push the accelarator pedal and back off on it, while you looked and listened underneath (don't get under the car though, and *do not* get any part of your body or clothing near anything that's moving).

Might be easier to isolate the problem, that way. Just my half-pence worth... 8-)
