I agree with Bill that synthetic doesn’t dry out gaskets and seals, but it doesn’t seem to swell them as well as dino. Some cars will do fine with it, even with high miles, but some will not.

My first 745 had 140K miles when I bought it, didn’t drip a drop of oil although there were traces of oil under the hood. I converted to synthetic, and within 2000 miles I had a 2 inch spot every morning on the garage floor. Following the advice from several guys on the old BMW digest I drained and refilled with straight dino, within about 1000 miles, the leak had reduced to a drop or two overnight.

I drained it and refilled with 4 ½ quarts of synthetic, and ½ a quart of dino. I put another 20K miles on that car before a couple of accidents while parked totaled it and it became my parts car, and the leak pretty much stayed the same, never got any better or any worse. Gotta wonder if I had used a little dino in the first place, if the leak would have worsened at all!

I’ve had similar experiences with a 911SC with a 124K, and a Ford van with 72K.

There are several stories in the archives of the 7 series digest and BCG of similar experiences, so it isn’t just me!

I have never had a spot of trouble switching to mobile 1 on any vehicle regardless of age.
