In midatlantic states US (NJ), the plastic one wears out in as little as five years...turns to powder when you touch it. It just disintigrates. Stainless makes sense, but I think much of the metal stuff available is aluminum anyway.

I wonder if one could get some made from stainless steel. Maybe a yachting supply can help.

PS. I wonder how quickly the plastic one's deterioate and fall apart.
