You could see if you have a key that is maybe better, not so rounded off from all the usage.
You could try a key ordered by number from the BMW Dealer.
If you don't have the number, best and easiest place to get it from is from your glove compartment lock.
Take out the look and the number is on the barrell.
A complete lock replacement set costs only about £120 which is $ or € 180.
It contains 4 keys including service key.
Steering Lock
Boot Lock
Glove compartment lock
Driver door lock
Passenger door lock
and very special a lockable tank filler cap.
They have to include it since the car was available without central locking.
I think it's a very good price.

I had to drill out my steering lock, and it will happen and it happens when you least can handle it.
Two weeks later I had to repeat this on the boot lock(Trunk lock).

I have had 3 BMW's which had suffered from this problem.
Usualy they were my older once '83. The locks on average will fail after between 10-20 years depending on the usage.
