Absolutely safe. I've been using it for years.
Put it in S to blow away from the lights with gearchange at 5200, then when the excitement is over, swap back to E economy mode. Change down the same way too.
Juggle that with holding the box in 3 to stop it going up to top and you can be busier than a one armed paperhanger.

All that is assuming the system is working of course which is the only reason I can see for warning you off.

Why wouldn't it be safe ? I think this is like asking : "Is it safe to downshift while moving ?". Because that's what will probably happen when you switch from E to S.

Don't worry about it , I think it's safe.
