Dont use anything that stays wet, eg. oil, WD-40, grease, etc. Use a good dry lube, silicone, or my personal favourite, wax lubes. Anything that leaves a residue that's at all sticky will kill the antenna sooner than no lube at all. You get dust and other objects sticking to the antenna and it acts just like sandpaper every time it goes up and down (making it worse, and giving even more places for gunk to build up).

My best results are from a wax based lube, like you find for bicycle chains (the good stuff you'd put on a $1500+ bike). Costs about $8-10 US for a bottle of something like Pedros Ice Wax (chain lube), but if you're using it for just antennas, will last you about a million years (last a long time if you use it for bicycle chains as well).

You want a lube that will prevent galling of the metal, but will not let anything stick to it to make it worse.
