1. California smog requirements. I can transplant a US M6 engine into my car and pass the rigid California red tape with proper cats and smog equipment. If I ATTEMPTED to do that with a 745 engine, I would likely have to go through the complete smog test which is $1500-$2000 with no guarantees I would pass. That is because the 745 engine was not originally approved for California. Even though I had a Euro M635 engine also, I did not use it to avoid this issue.
2. I run my car on the track. I have some reservations about durability on a modded 745i on the track. Will it hold up at several 2 day driving schools a year? I've run 3 track schools this year and am going to another one in 2 weeks. NO problems whatsoever.
3. I run my car on the track. I think it would be difficult to control the boost (and therefore power) through a 90 mph sweeper. And I don't want to be surprised...
If someone has tracked their 745 regularly and can offer differing opinions, I'll listen.
Eric,
I underestand your reasons regarding californian restrictions.
As about durability issues on M102 (turbo) engine under higher boosts, I guess tuoma and John Stein have already prouven that even on very high mileaged engines and on a very long priod there's absoloutly no problem at all. The only weaknees on a track use may come from tranny. These engines were raced by BMW, on ///M1 procar racing series (Gr.5) and made up to 850 HP on race conditions with no problem at all.... So you see, this engine's limit is way far after what we need on a steet/track use.
As about difficulties to control the boost on a track, it's just a matter of habit, a know how that you can lern. I never tacked my 745i, but Porsche 930 turbo, which is still more tricky because of its rear engine (scary tail happy!) you need to keep your ///M engine over 3500 rpm anyway, that's where the M102 engine is fully on boost an you dispose 650+ Nm already....So I guess this engine is way ahead, even on a track use....
Sorry for the long post, I hope that I could clear up some issues to you.
Regards, Afshin. (a turbo junkie!)
