the sacrifice metal when it is used in primers or embedded in sheet metal to form galvanized steel. The rust process attacks the zinc first since it's the path of least resistance. But once the zinc is depleted then the rust process attacks the steel. I'm not an engineer, but we do learn by doing research. I would imagine that my statement could be proven by someone more knowledgeable. I'm just throwing it out there.regards

BTW, truckers have long discovered that bolting a block of zinc onto to the truck body will greatly diminish the rusting process.

I have had zinc anodes on my boat but never thought them to be effective on a car. This is for real?
