Key to purchase this model of BMW is compression- An alloy that was used to the line the cylinders [nikasil] was eaten away by sulpher in gasoline.BMW was forced to upgrade the warrantee to 100,000 miles because of the problem. Many of cars are affected- dependent on the area of the country and how much sulpher was in the gas. A lot as been written about this. Do a search on the web. BMW has a lot of experience doing a multiple test procedure to determine the level of corrosion in any particular engine. Be aware of the cost of engine replacement [$5000.00 ++++] Symptoms include rough idle. Also check on the problem of the plastic parts that tend to desolve in the transmission. I think the price of tranny fluid on this model is $50.00 a pint. Do NOT buy the car without a compression test!!!

I am thinking of buying a 1995 740IL with 120,000 miles for $14,900. Is there anything that I should be concerned with? Is this a good price? I've noticed that a lot of engine replacements. What's that? And do I need to stay away from this BMW 740il.
