BMW techs spend alot of time replacing the short block on these cars. I have seen them do plenty of 7's and a few 5's. They pull everthing off, put the new block in and hook everything back up. The local dealer had one guy doing this full time.

They were under warranty until 100K after that it is the owners expense. I am not sure if there was a time clause on that but you better make sure.
