I would actually suggest finding an independant shop that specializes in older BMWs. You should be able to find one if you live near a major metropolitan area. These guys will be better schooled in what to look for in an older car.

I think it's worth every penny of the $100 or so. When I bought my M635 I took it in and it was amazing what they found (and what the previous owner paid to have fixed) that I never would have caught.

: I have decided that the difference between the 5sp and auto trans doesn't bother me. I am going to purchase a red 1986 BMW 635CSi. It is a beautiful 95k mi car with perfect interior where everything works, including power headrests and sport thigh bolsters. the rear needs a new paint job as it does not match due to a repaint after slight accident ( however, my dad and i checked by literaly hitting the critical areas under the car and found NO structural damage.) There is no rust and the engine is working fine (my dad knows engines, has rebuilt plenty, and can testify this himself). I don't mind the auto trans as it is the switchable S/E/321 Hold trans. You guys have all been great help for me in understanding the cars, and I hope that i will be able to come here for more questions. Do you think i need a pre-purcahse checkup at my local bimmer dealer?
