I used to own a 1987 635CSi 5 spd and "upgraded" to a 1987 M6 earlier this year. As Ed says in his post below, BOTH cars fit the bill for me. I suggest considering the relative condition of the two cars carefully in making your decision, particularly body condition and rust. In my case, the ///M6 was in somewhat better condition after the usual litany of repairs (brakes, rims, tires). It truly represents an upgrade, and I consider it a better car for me over the long haul.

IMHO the actual difference in driving pleasure at North American speeds is relatively small. Repair and fuel costs on the M series are definitely higher. It is also somewhat more intimidating to work on yourself (haven't really had to yet, except for the standard electrical gremlins). But hey, I love the new car and won't be using it as a daily driver this winter. For daily driving, particularly in the city, I would actually prefer the 635CSi. On the highway.........
