Bent shift selector shaft from flex joint failure (archive)

I have an '86 635Csi with 114,000 miles. I just rebuilt the trans 6 months ago and the front flex joint failed on the freeway. The driveshaft smacked the shifting mechanism and bent the selector shaft exiting the transmission above the output shaft. Has anyone had any experience bending this shaft without removal of the transmission from the car?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
