The selector rod can be removed completely without removing the trans, exhaust, or driveshaft. It clips to the selector rod joint (the part right at the tranny) by the same type of clip that's at the other end, where it attaches to the shift lever.
A new selector rod should cost under $10 at the dealer.

: I have an '86 635Csi with 114,000 miles. I just rebuilt the trans 6 months ago and the front flex joint failed on the freeway. The driveshaft smacked the shifting mechanism and bent the selector shaft exiting the transmission above the output shaft. Has anyone had any experience bending this shaft without removal of the transmission from the car?
: Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
