: Hi-

: I had my 635 in for an 'inspection II' and got the call just got the call of problems they found and estimated prices:
: idle control valve ... $220
: pwr steer leak(seepage) ... 110
: Brake booster leak(seep) ... 1200
: oil leaks(seepages):
: case cover ... 611
: ?duck? gasket ... 152
: oil pan gasket ... 330
: drive belts(old) ... 120
: tie rod & alignment ... 200
: Drive shaft(vibration when
: accerating) ... 1200

: I was wondering if anyone could give me recommendations for what should be done immediately and what can wait a while for me to win 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire'. Also are any of these repairs trivial to do like maybe the oil pan gasket? Thanks.

Obviously, you know older cars "seep" fluids. When they turn into significant "drips" I would worry more about them. You can judge by your garage floor. In the meantime, oil is cheap (your service provider is obviously NOT).

A tie rod end is $30, installation takes 30 minutes, and setting the toe, maybe $35. That isn't close to $200!!

If the drive shaft vibration IS the driveline (not the guido, which is $50 plus 1 hour install if they can get it in w/o pulling the exhaust and driveshaft, which I routinely can do). A rebuilt driveshaft is $600 plus 1 hour install.

If your car fast idles cold and holds 600-900 rpm (holds a constant rpm somewhere between 600-900 that is), don't worry about the ICV yet.

There, we just got you done for $300 bucks; don't you feel better? Remember, it's not a new car. Unless you expect it to be, relax and enjoy it.

Bob
