: I just bought the red 1986 BMW 635CS(i)- the i in the badge is missing. I got all the filters and oil to do a service, and i am scheduling a valve appointment. However, i have a problem with the instrumentation. Sometimes, the lights for the gear selector (its an auto trans- switchable) don't work. The tach either takes a while to come on but lately hasn't come on at all, and the temp gauge jumps around, then goes dead. I believe that there must be some sort of short in the instrument panel and i am wondering whether finding the wires would be a large project that i should just have done by BMW.

I'm not certain on this, but I've heard that there are two batteries mounted on the back of the instrument cluster and when they go bad, they can cause problems with the instrumentation, especially the tach and oil service lights. Can anyone add to this?
