The same thing exactly happens to me with a 1986 635csi. It sure is irritating and a battery of mechanics have tried & failed to find the problem. It is probably NOT caused by my Bosch Platinum +4 plugs, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, ignition wires, external fuel pump, oxygen sensor, temperature sensor, or a faulty air induction system. The ONLY thing BMW could suggest was that my internal fuel pump was working intermittently... Of course they would say that 'cuz it is very labour-intensive to replace it (you have to remove the rear seat & go through a removable panel in the gas tank): and I'm convinced that bmw service personnel are rip-off artists extrordinaire.

If anyone else has this problem, please post the cure when you find it. If I replace my pump & that does it, I'll let everyone know, but... it sure is expensive...
