You can try the Big Coupe Groupe FAQ under "remote SI battery instalation. Havn't done the job myself, but have seen several posts on the Big Coupe Groupe on this problem. URL follows:

: I just bought the red 1986 BMW 635CS(i)- the i in the badge is missing. I got all the filters and oil to do a service, and i am scheduling a valve appointment. However, i have a problem with the instrumentation. Sometimes, the lights for the gear selector (its an auto trans- switchable) don't work. The tach either takes a while to come on but lately hasn't come on at all, and the temp gauge jumps around, then goes dead. I believe that there must be some sort of short in the instrument panel and i am wondering whether finding the wires would be a large project that i should just have done by BMW.
