This is NOT a sign of immanent failure. Quite a few BMWs, including the M6 and 325e have noisey bearings in the tranny. My M635 has always made this noise. It quites after a fluid change, but comes back after about 500 miles. It has never affected performance.

: : Lately, the clutch on my '84 633 has been making a kind of rattling noise whenever I release it.
: ------------------------------------------------
: Generally if the noise goes away when you press on the clutch, it is a bad internal bearing in the tranny, NOT the throwout bearing.

: If however, you can make it go quiet by just LIGHTLY pressing on the clutch (not disengaging it), it COULD be the throwout bearing.
